Subsidence Monitoring
GSHI, with the assistance of Agapito Associates, installed
Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) technology to monitor sub-surface caving, similar
to monitoring subsidence in long wall coal mining. The TDR method involves
grouting a coaxial cable in a borehole located over a mine void. The cable
is interrogated by sending an electrical impulse down the cable. Any cable
deformation will reveal any rock deformation, providing advance warning of
additional collapse. These monitoring devices have been installed near the
Isabella/Eureka Mines, the Mary Mine, and the Tennessee/Cherokee Mines, all
identified as areas having significant potential for future collapse.
