Copper Basin Teachers Visit Taft High Near Occidental's Elk Hills, California Facility

Recently, a group of teachers from Copper Basin High School visited Taft High School near Occidental Petroleum's Elk Hills, California oil and gas facility. Taft High implemented an "oil academy" designed to prepare students for a career in the oil industry. Students who graduate from the oil academy often proceed to universities with strong petroleum industry programs. Occidental Petroleum is a primary sponsor of Taft High's oil academy.

Copper Basin High School hopes to implement a similar program emphasizing careers in the environmental or forestry fields. Since mining operations no longer support the local economy, students must refocus their career goals to fit the available resources.

Glenn Springs representative, Debbie Laurienzo, accompanied the teacher delegation to Taft High School, as part of Glenn Springs' commitment to helping the Polk County economy.
